I'm only..11 days behind on a current project, which means 5 and a half hours to catch up. I should do that today, since phase two is suppose to begin now.

I still have a lot to update, but I'm not sure if it's worth going back, scrounging up, and posting. Maybe i'll just let it fade away

Sarah and I have been moving into our new house without ease, I have too much stuff...there's no getting around it. Literally.

Summer has treated me rather fairly, Ryan and I made some new friends on the NY trip, which is always nice. We also went to the Whitney Biennial, PS1, and the Guggenheim.

The Whitney was alright, I only really enjoyed a couple of piececs. PS1 hands down was the best for me, Olafur Eliasson was awesome, so was their show of early feminist works. The Guggenheim was pretty good, we got to see Cai Guo-Qiang, which was sweet. I should probably do a post on the shows...but we'll see.

Everything I've made before this semester needs to go. I'm not asking for money, I'm asking for a collaboration. If there's anything on here that you want (pre this semester) let me know, and we can work this out. I'm pretty sure the two big blind contours and the doll have already found themselves a home.. but other than that everything is pretty fair game.

I want to get wild with this, I want you guys to really take part. I just want everyone to realize that once it's in your hands, it's your's and you can do anything you want with it. We're suppose to do a painting a day, here are some of the first few I did..One is too big to scan right now.

"Where do you get your information from?"

This was a project for my conceptual practices class. We were asked "where do you get your information from?" and were told to make a piece that answers the question.

My answer was through encounter, and by encounter ultimately experience. I didn't want to create a piece about a specific circumstance, that would be too limited, therefore I strove to create a piece that really could be anything, and really capitalize on the process of producing "just anything".

I used a real number randomizer that uses atmospheric noise to generate numbers, and applied those numbers to different numbered objects. I picked and numbered 300 objects, but only used 100 of them. I let the randomizer choose 100 numbers between 1-300, and then picked those objects to be used and applied in my process. I also took 100+ verbs from different sources and randomized them, aswell as 100+ adverbs from different sources and randomized those. I then took the time frame of 4 hours and had time intervals of twos randomized, and put them all together in the chart above. After all this was organized I performed and recorded 50 of the above acts.

These were some of the objects I chose..

For the final display i put my video of my process where the actions took place and played it on loop. I set all the extra objects back on the table, and left the not-yet acted objects in line of order leading into the space I used. I thought having the video play in the room was a good idea, because it lets people know that this is the focus of the piece and something they should take note of.

I wanted to show as much of process as possible, with many hints along the way. On the object table i set out the "object key", and by the monitor I had my used and marked list of actions.

I'll post the full video with the entire process of numbering and choosing once it's done uploading. You'll also see Sarah Valdez through most of it, because she helped me execute at least 50% of this huge project.

This is just really funny..
While in NY we saw Haley Joe Osman (the kid from the sixth sense) eating at the same cafe as us, and before he walked out the door i tried to do a super quick blind contour of him, which turned out looking pretty much just like a lamb.

So far this has been my favorite self portrait. I did it with my eyes closed, really focusing my attention on each part of my face as if I were touching it. This drawing really reflects the view I had of myself when I drew it.

This is one of my favorite drawings. While I was at the Moma I was doing some Blind Contours of other artist's pieces, then drawing out the name written on the plaque. With this one I decided to draw out the entire text on this certain plaque (which was actually really painstaking and ended up being super exhausting). My objective was not to write, but to draw, to see the letters abstractly through occupied and negative space, as well as form.

Ironically, after doing so, i came across the work of Leon Ferrari, a still living artist who did a lot of the same thing during the 70's. His drawing caught my eye immediately, i really was drawn to the line qualities and mark making. I then read that he had some similar objectives as me, which sort of made me laugh. I've been beat by 40 years.

While in New York a couple of my friends and I went to see I am Legend, and during the entire movie (however long it was, an hour and a half?) i continuously made a responsive mark. At times it was almost meditative, while at other times it was purely responsive and expressive.

Making my room into more of a work space

So my room has been pretty trashed for the past couple weeks due to several projects and numerous failed attempts to arrange my room more like a studio, but I think i've found the solution. I decided to divide my room by a sheet 'wall'. Now my room is set up more like a studio, with a comfy nook for my bed.

Some details:I decided on the last day to present it upside-down. I think it gives it a darker, more unsettling feel, as well as gives the viewer the chance to fill in some gaps.
But here's what it looked like right-side up. While making the piece, though, I turned it a bunch of different ways..

The two of them together; I just thought this looked sort of funny.

With this piece, I think there are a couple things I'll still work on. I need to finish up the sides, and maybe even take advantage of the deepness of the panel, and I'll probably work the nose back into the piece more; make it a little more integrated and less demanding.

I had a lot of fun making this, and a lot of things (like the creases in the fingers above) came on total incident. I'm pleased with how it turned out, and I'd like to make more things like this in the future.
By the way, it's suppose to be a 'kind' self portrait of me for my Illustration class. I was going to do a big painting (one that goes along with the post that precedes this one) but decided to make something three dimensional and more engaging.

So back in 12th grade I ended up doing a bunch of these little (they were really small, like 3"x4") paintings on the inside cardboard of cereal boxes for commission..It was fun, but then it got really sucky really fast. People liked them though, I had over a dozen offers, but man did they get old and stupid. Never paint people's kids, let me say it now, ESPECIALLY when they give you the worst 'picture day' picture from 2nd grade. Plzzz

Cardinal Letter

So i spent some time yesterday making this for my grandmother. She hasn't been well lately, and it really is only a matter of time. I wanted to make her something special from the heart, so I did this.

She loves Red Cardinals and has been collecting everything she can of them, so i wanted to do a little pen and ink drawing. The background is a little fudged, but I really didnt plan this out at all (i just started in with ink, first messing around, but then i just kept going). I also wanted to write her a letter, and have all of this presented in a really well put-together way.

The outside is a flap that holds and protects all of it, then there is gray 'card' that i glued to the inside of flap, which incases the picture of the bird and the letter. The letter is two white folded pieces of thick paper, which gives me up to 6 pages to write on. I then bound it with a band of paper that fits right around it.

Now the hard part is what to say.

School is a week away, and I am certainly nervous and with mixed feelings.

I've been having a good time with the precollege kids, and have come to quite a few different realizations over this month. I'll soon be heading home, and then most likely flying to Chicago with Jenn. I have a few big plans as far as artistic endeavors, we'll see how that all comes through.

Artist Statement

"Blind contours are filled with content. They capture one’s honest and uninterrupted perceptual concentration. I am fascinated by their candid qualities, and drawn in by their truth. Little is imposed on them; there are hardly any intentions of style, and no indications of preconception. They are beautifully unique to each individual and embody the real and unforced spirit of visual interpretation.

I choose to use blind contours as a foundation for many of my works because they best record a moment that I am actually seeing and being a part of. I find a closer connection and a more natural relationship with these drawings, and love to bring them into other levels. It's almost as if I'm doing a collaboration with myself, between my conscious and unconscious, though which is more conscious is still unclear to me."

This was the statement I turned in for the faculty Pre-college show, along with my giant Michelle piece.

I had a lot of people tell me they liked it (and some that said it was their favorite), and that they really enjoyed my statement. That was pleasing to hear, really pleasing to hear. I wasn't sure how it would blow over, but I got an incredible amount of positive feedback. Earlier in the day Aaron Board, one of our precollege teachers, who does amazing figurative work (with lots of interesting ideas and concepts involved), came up to me and told me that he really liked my peice, and actually liked just everything about it. That was super awesome to hear, especially coming from him.

Also! I got a new sketchbook, finally. This (above) is what i've done so far since Tuesday, I think it's coming along. This sketchbook is so much nicer than my last one, and I really want to try new things out and expand, and really do a lot of personal studies and the like.

Lots and lots of writing lately, i know.

So I was suppose to go to California this summer, but that planned failed twice. I was going to take a road trip there, through Denver, to San Fran, and down the coast of California. I was going to eat Mexican food from Sombrero's (just because) and everything (please, someone get that reference). But that whole thing fell through, and sure that sucks, but I'm thinking of something else...

Lately i've been wanting more, more from my work, and more from my life. I drew someone from my hometown that I used to be really closed to tonight and somehow it really brought me back to the heart of my work. I really miss home, and I haven't been there in a long freaking while. I think that going home for a month would be just as good as going to California. I've lived in the same small town (Niceville, no it's not a joke) my whole life, and Sarasota has been my first break away from it. Needless to say I did choose to over avoid going back, but my heart aches for that whole familiarity. I miss the woods, the colors, the smells; everything i grew up on, including my family especially.

I think the 'more' that I want is the 'more' that I've always had. I think I'm going to take the last month of this summer and go home. I'm going to draw all the places that I've loved and cherished, but never really knew how to express, and take the time to connect with my family and really lay it all down.

I think this is going to be the densest sketchbook yet, and i think it will have a huge impact on my work.
I want to recclaim the heart of it, and really learn how to connect with everything.

Lynda Bostrom has cordially invited me to be in a show with her & Anthony Zollo this October. This is really exciting news for me. I love both of their work greatly, so this will be an honor. I'll keep you guys posted on that.

Transitioning Mass

Our assignment was to create forms that change in mass.
My concept was to have something very organic gradually become more mechanized and geometric, and as it's transforming it loses life and becomes hard, compact, and essentially dead.

First Semester : Symbol

I liked the concept behind these. We had to make symbols, then apply them to something (like a pillow) and make a tradable (like a token).

We had to pick two cultures, and two relationships. I choose human society and nature as a culture, then picked war and peace from a list of given relationships. We had to make three symbols, using either an eye, heart, or hands, and represent the two polar opposites (war and peace) and a neutral.

This was the "peace". I wanted the hands to be in perfect harmony with nature in a way which makes the hands inseparable from the landscape, thus forcing them to become one.

I think it would be cool to do something nicer with this symbol..

And was from highschool. I found it lying around my room, and i considered throwing it away..but thought hey, i could do a little more to it. And that little more became a lot more, and now it's just completely different. It's only 4"x5", done on the inside cardboard of a cereal box with acryclic paints.
